Welcome to the Be Fab Be You Made Simple Podcast. I am your host Maria Horstmann and founder of BeFabBeYou.com. I’d like to start wishing you and your loved ones a prosperous and vibrant year.

I was planning today’s episode to be the follow-up to episode 59, which focused on cytokine storms and inflammation. However, as I started to work on it, my heart said, nope, you are going to talk about something else. So here we go.

During the first two-three weeks of a new year, we hear words such as new year’s resolutions and goals A LOT. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Maybe you feel like I do in that department. There is something special about the 01/01 or the first day of year. The several days leading to it and after it offer many opportunities of reflection, realization, gratitude, change, transformation, growth, and more.

COMPLETE TRANSCRIPT IN ACCORDION

When it comes to new year’s resolutions, it’s rare for anyone to EXCLUDE wellness and health from the conversation, isn’t it?

Most people define wellness as exercising three times a week and eating a healthy diet (anything in moderation is fine –oh Lord).

What’s a healthy diet? What does moderation mean? Ask 10 people and you are likely to get 10 different answers. Why is that?  Let me introduce you to biochemical individuality. And although most people agree with that concept, it’s easy to lose perspective of it. Many people go on to follow and apply someone else’s health practices expecting to achieve the results of that person.

Spoiler alert: Do not expect your biochemistry and body to function like that of your sibling, friend, parent, gym buddy, and especially of that celebrity you follow.

Absolutely, go ahead and use the drive, commitment, and pattern of consistency they used to achieve amazing results to inspire you to take action right now to build and sustain a practices that will make you feel amazing in your own skin. Please, do not expect similar results. Do not compare your results with someone else’s, and please do not spread the word that eating healthier didn’t do jack after 30 days or even longer.

Spoiler alert #2: eating healthier alone will unlikely heal malfunctions and get to the root of any Metabolic Chaos going on. It may improve some of the symptoms and keep problems from getting worse. You have to uncover the hidden stressors so you can apply a more effective protocol.

Our job is to understand our bodies, realize that our cells don’t need to be told what to do, instead they need to be fed awesomeness so we thrive. Our job is to uncover any malfunctions and deficiencies. Our job is to identify healing opportunities so that we restore homeostasis again.

Whether medications are part of your daily protocol, never ever discard the unreplaceable role of whole food diet, sleep habits, stress reduction practices, consistent movement/exercise, and supplementation play in your body. You just need to understand where you are at so you know how to go from here.

By the way, as an Integrative Functional Diagnostic Practitioner/Coach (FDN-P), I can help you with all these steps. All you need to do is to go to BeFabBeYou.com/energy-audit to schedule a complimentary strategy session with me.

My wellness philosophy is simple.

Wellness is much more than eating and exercising!!!

Quality of life is a function of multiple dimensions of wellness: social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, occupational, intellectual and physical. Each dimension plays a role in our health.

Despite cultural, ethnic, social class, race, language, and economical backgrounds, each one of us is affected differently and responds differently to the interactions of these dimensions.

  • I believe personal accountability and responsibility are key to achieving a balanced lifestyle and ultimately, wellness.
  • I believe knowledge empowers us to make vital decisions.
  • I believe it is easy to get overwhelmed with internal and external stressors, but it is up to each one of us to allow them into our lives.
  • I believe in a positive outlook. I believe commitment and determination will allow us to go beyond our imagination.
  • I believe focusing on what matters & what we can control is the key ingredient to being present, living a better present, and making a better future!
  • Lastly, I believe seeking help and guidance is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength and self-respect!

What are these dimensions of wellness

Social Wellness: friends, family, community engagement, people diversity

Emotional Wellness: embrace life as is, external support, build interdependent relationships, personal responsibility, positive outlook, live-learn-apply-grow

Spiritual Wellness: purpose in life, affirmation values, beliefs, forgiveness

Environmental Wellness: natural resources, awareness of surroundings, help others

Occupational Wellness: work and personal balance, love for what you do, cultural activities, mental growth

Intellectual Wellness: open-minded, open to learn, grow, mind exercises

Physical Wellness: mind and body performance through smart nutrition choices and exercises (stability, flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, self-esteem, confidence

Whether we have worked together or we’ve talked before or you read my newsletter or listen to this podcast or stay in touch with me somehow, you know I am big in taking responsibility for our CHOICES!!!

Most of us have a great deal of freedom and can express it. Some sources suggest that the average person makes 35,000 choices per day. A decision is a choice. So, assuming you sleep about 7 hours/night, you are making one decision every two freaking seconds.

Speaking strictly about health-related choices, good Lord, watch out who and how you communicate your beliefs. People become extremely defensive. Look, I speak with great experience. I used to make all sorts of excuses and be very defensive about my actions or lack of actions. Being in denial is a classic trait too. Many of my clients experienced that…well, that’s one of the reasons they came to me…whatever they were doing was not working so they figured they needed something different. Our journey together opens each person to perspectives, realities, and growth.  In the end, it’s a beautiful thing to be part of someone’s growth and health improvement.

Now, I also believe that our attitude will guide our choices, whether you determine them to be good or poor choices.

On the topic of attitude, Charles Swindoll, an educator, author, and pastor said it best:

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.  Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.  It will make or break a company… a church… a home.  The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable.  The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes”

That’s all I have for you today, my friend. Next episode, I will wrap up these wellness topics and dive into Wellness Scale before I get back to the topic of immune responses, macrophages, and weight gain I had promised.

Lastly, allow me to give you some food for thought…

If you haven’t done so yet, I encourage you to think about how your attitude impacts your choices. Are your choices congruent with your values, dreams, and aspirations in life? Is your attitude helping or derailing your progress? How do your attitude and choices impact your well-being and lifestyle? What aspect of your wellness could use some upgrade in 2022? Why is it a priority to you? Is your WHY big enough to inspire change in you?

Jot your conclusions in your journal. Transfer your reflections from your brain to a piece of paper. Clarity often raises from that experience.
